Advice For The Young And Musical

Having worked and studied for several years in many different capacities of the music industry, I would humbly submit a few things I have learned which may be helpful to a young artist. 1. Create the music industry right where you live. Every opportunity you are given to use your talent is a chance for you to grow as an artist and to learn to serve your community. 2. A strong tree starts with strong roots. Surround yourself with family and friends; loving, encouraging, supporting people who will keep you accountable, grounded and focused as you develop your talent. 3. Learn everything you possibly can about the mechanics of your instrument and the mechanics of music in general. Take voice lessons. If you don't have access to a voice teacher, learn for free from some of the best online, (like Chris Beatty http://blog.vocalcoach.com/ ). Learn music theory. If you learn to accompany yourself on an instrument (guitar, piano) you won't have to depend on someone else to help you express your musical ideas. 4. Learn how to make technology work for you. Simple digital recording tools such as Garage Band will help you jot down song ideas. Social media such as Facebook, SoundCloud and Twitter will allow you connect with fans around the world.
5. Learn how the music business works and seek out the wisdom of experienced professionals so you can make wise choices for your career. There are several websites which offer fantastic advice for young artists. CD Baby http://diymusician.cdbaby.com/ DiscMakers http://www.discmakers.com/community/resources/

Advice For The Young And Musical - Friday, January 14, 2011 -

1. Take your craft (but never yourself) seriously.
2. Never be afraid to try something new.
3. Only reach up for the nearest rung on the ladder. (The head of UMG can't help you; the guy who fixes your guitar can.)
4. You're never truly "ready" so always work harder than anyone else.
5. Give the world your gift (since it is a gift) and make is special. Giving it away for free is ok; if you touch peoples' lives, at some point you will be paid.

Don't pay anybody to make you a star, if they could do it, they would already be rich and famous.
