A strong tree starts with strong roots. Surround yourself with family and friends; loving, encouraging, supporting people who will keep you accountable, grounded and focused as you develop your talent. 3. Learn everything you possibly can about the mechanics of your instrument and the mechanics of music in general. Take voice lessons. If you learn to accompany yourself on an instrument (guitar, piano) you won't have to depend on someone else to help you express your musical ideas. 4. Learn how to make technology work for you. Simple digital recording tools such as Garage Band will help you jot down song ideas. Social media such as Facebook, SoundCloud and Twitter will allow you connect with fans around the world.
